Checking for Hoaxes

Page history last edited by Mrs. Train 13 years, 10 months ago

Gaaaa! (insert expletives)

Please don't send me hoaxes.

Here's what you do...

  • Choose a phrase from the e-mail you've just received.

For example... "Bill Gates will pay for every e-mail you send" or "dying of cancer and wants a postcard"

  • Enter it, with quotation marks" into your favourite search engine (I use Google).
  • Beside the quote, add the word HOAX.
  • Search.

If it's a hoax, (unless someone just started it two minutes ago), it will probably say so on

  • Hoax-Slayer
  • Snopes
  • Urbanlegends.About.com
  • and the facinating Museum of Hoaxes
  • and others

(Disclaimer: yeah, yeah, I once sent a hoax to someone. You're allowed one.)
