Group work - a staple of many of today's curriculums! These tools make it easier to collaborate from home or in a computer lab. As well as the ones listed below, consider the use of wikis and other tools. Many even offer a history of revisions so you can track who does what, for assessment purposes.
The mother of all collaborative tools is current Google Docs. Docs contains lite versions of a word processor, spreadsheet, database and presentation software. You can also upload your existing documents to Google Docs for sharing.

Vyew - up to 20 participants can work together in real-time on this site, for free. A simple whiteboard lets you upload documents, markup documents or create new ones from scratch. There are also a variety of specialized plugins with mathematic equations editors, etc.
Zoho offers a free suite of document and collaboration creation.
